“Naked and Afraid” to Survive in a Web-Based Business

ass on the lineI am not big on TV, but when I just need to unwind without a cocktail, I will turn on the tube to see what’s on. My mindless go-to is “Law and Order,” but finding no episodes, I fumbled around the dial and found Discovery Channel’s show, “Naked and Afraid.” I had seen a couple of promos and dismissed it as “Survivor” without clothes, all about getting eyeballs. But after sitting there and watching three back-to-back episodes, I realized how wrong I was.

The premise of “Naked and Afraid” is that two strangers with survival skills, a man and a woman, are dropped off at a desolate and dangerous area without clothing. They bring one tool and a sling purse. Period. The goal: to survive for 21 days.

Aside from the occasional butt shot, the nakedness gets fuzzed out for the TV. But the lack of clothing adds whole new dimension of seriousness to the challenge. What would you do if [Read more…]

Making Promo Videos with iMovie for iPad the Easy Way

Making Promo Videos with iMovie for iPad the Easy WayRecently my team at New Tricks launched our new website and I wanted to add a video that let our visitors know that we understood what they needed and were in a good place with our talents to pay attention to helping them get there.

I have done videos before. I have done Webinars, taped them and released the recording.

I learned to use Screenflow for doing training videos and can do those in my sleep. I also used that technology to video myself sitting at my desk. I did a seven video series called Getting Started with WordPress and slammed right through putting them together during a snow storm.

We have had people speak at WordPress Meetups on doing videos for your website but one of the guys that made the biggest impression on me was [Read more…]

Inquiries and Leads

overwhelmed by inquiriesNot understanding the difference between an inquiry and a lead, and what to do with them, can be a problem for business owners. You may think you’d love to have lots of people contacting your business about working with you. But be careful what you wish for. It can be overwhelming.

What’s the difference between an inquiry and a lead?

People who download a white paper or register for your webcast are not leads. Just because someone reads your newsletter does not make them a lead.  Someone who sends a contact form is not a lead. These are all inquiries from people who are expressing interest in understanding more about how to solve a particular problem they have.

A lead is someone who has been qualified as a true business opportunity for a specific solution you offer. A lead has the budget, authority, need, and a specific time frame for purchasing a solution for their problem.

So having lots of inquiries is the big issue. A recent article in Forbes discussed research showing as many as [Read more…]

Steps for Building a Simple Online Sales Funnel

Last week I wrote a post about why you need more than a pretty website. Even if a website makes your business look good, it won’t necessarily work to convert your visitors into clients. If you want your website to work better than a glorified business card, you need a way to attract people to your site, a mechanism to capture leads and a system for nurturing those leads until a percentage of them are ready to buy from you. That is called a sales funnel.  I know it sounds complicated so I’m going to give you an example of the steps involved in building a simple online sales funnel. This is the same technique I’ve used to build my business at New Tricks.

More Than a Pretty Website

sales funnelThe truth is, at New Tricks we care more about helping our clients grow their businesses than just giving them a fancy makeover.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post called Why Your Website is a Dud at Bringing in New Business. Yes, a website design that makes your business look good and trustworthy is important, but we’ve found that it isn’t enough to attract the right people and convert them into clients. There is actually a science to it.

When you have a small business, marketing involves putting your ass on the line and taking a stand for what you do. Because you are so identified with your business, or are just uncomfortable with marketing and sales, it can be really uncomfortable. I get it. But if you want to grow your business you really do have to be ok with standing out.

To get the right people to your website, and get them interested in working with you or buying from you, your website has to get your ideal client’s attention and create an emotional connection with them.

This requires you to understand what the problem is that you have a solution for. You need to make it really clear on your website that you understand their situation and then clearly present an awesome solution. [Read more…]

Why Your Website is a Dud at Bringing in New Business

why your website isn't bringing in new businessIn the past few years, advances in website technology have made it easier to create websites. But, it is not so easy to create a company website that can bring in business.

Most business owners don’t have time to become experts in digital marketing. Yet, it is tempting for them to try and save some money by doing it themselves.  Or worse, they turn the design and development of the company website over to their brother-in-law. Consequently, there are a lot of bad websites out there causing companies to lose business. [Read more…]

No matter how far I have come or how much I have learned, On occasion, I find myself taking on something I know I should walk away from.  And these things, have a tendency to come back and bite me.  I am digging myself out of one of those situations at the moment.

You’ve Launched your Website Now What ?

What's next after website launchYou’ve launched your business website. You like how it looks, your home page messaging seems on target and then crickets……

“Build it and they will come” is a nice idea but I’m afraid it’s going to take a bit more work than that.

Seems silly to say, but I’m going to say it anyway, to grow your business online, you’re going to need to do some marketing. The good thing is that these days, it takes time rather than money. You will need to figure out what actions you need to take that are right for your business, then do those things – consistently. When you begin to take the right kinds of actions you will start to see the magic.

So what exactly will you need to do?

First, you will need [Read more…]

Plant the Seeds Today For Your Miracle Tomorrow

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle and the other is as though everything is miracle.

– Albert Einstein

plant the seeds today for your miracle tomorrowI just came across this quote which was timely since I feel like I just experienced a miracle. Twenty-five years ago, I had a skiiing accident that came back to haunt me.  Last year, I had been waiting for a pain in my right knee to go away when I went to the doctor to have it checked out. I was stunned to hear that there was no cartilage and sooner or later I would have to have that knee replaced. Yikes. Not what I wanted to hear. I was not going to be able to get back to walking and dancing without the surgery that heard had a grueling three month recovery period. [Read more…]
