We’d known for a while that New Tricks needed its own new website. The site was 4+ years old, detailed services we no longer provide, displayed photos that weren’t of our current team, and ran on an outdated platform that worked but was increasingly slow and made updating the site cumbersome.
Like so many business owners, we had been so busy helping our clients, our own business needs kept getting pushed to the side. Ultimately, we knew how important it was for our primary communications tool to accurately reflect the way we help clients that we prioritized the work and launched our new site last week.
The whole process got me thinking:
How do you know when it’s time for a new website?
Here are some of the things we were feeling and comments we have heard from our clients. If any of these resonate with you, let’s talk. You’ll be surprised how much a new site can do for your business.
5 Reasons It’s Time for a New Website
- You’re Ashamed (Or at Least Not Proud) of Your Website.
Have you ever spent 10 minutes making excuses for the mess in your kitchen after an unexpected visitor stopped by? Your excuses don’t change the impression your guest has when she sees the dishes piled up in your sink. The same thing happens when you share your website url and apologize for the way it looks or reads. The outdated site is already sending a message to your prospective client. It may reflect poorly on your company’s attention to detail, use of modern tools, or ability to keep up with work.
- You Get All Your New Business From Referrals.
If you find that you are bragging that you get all of your clients from referrals, that may not be a good thing. What it actually means is that your website is not bringing in business. In fact, it may be costing you business. It is great that your existing clients are so happy with your work that they send business your way, but what about prospective clients that don’t know your existing clients? Is your website welcoming them, expressing the value you provide, and communicating clear next steps? How much money are you leaving on the table?
- Your Logo, Branding, and Website Design are Old Fashioned.
Nobody wants to hear that their baby is ugly. And fortunately, your website isn’t your baby. But it is your primary marketing tool and needs to present your company in the best possible light. Just like jeans from the 80s, logos and branding don’t last forever. If you haven’t considered updating your logo, fonts, colors, images, and messaging in a couple of years, it’s probably time. You’ll be surprised with what happens when you dress your business for success.
- Your Website Is Generic.
Put yourself in the shoes of your ideal customer and look at your website from their point of view. Does the messaging set your business apart and explain why someone should work with you rather than a competitor? Do you explain how your unique approach solves your customers’ problems? Does the design stand out or look like all the other sites for companies that provide the same goods and services you provide? Your site should connect with prospective customers in seconds and have them saying, “This is just what I have been looking for!”
- Your Website was Built 3-5 Years Ago Using Software that Has Since Evolved.
Perhaps your website looks ok, but making changes is difficult and costly because of the theme or page builder it uses. Before you continue pouring time and money into your older site, consider rebuilding it with a new, sophisticated page builder so you can keep it fresh and up-to-date easily and affordably. New Tricks uses the Elementor page builder to create modern, modular sites that evolve as your business grows. Elementor makes it easy to strengthen your business website with attention-grabbing headlines, thoughtful page layouts, unique graphical treatments, and so much more. Rebuilding your site in Elementor is a valuable step in upgrading your online presence.
